Description

Elevate your dishes with this Homemade Furikake Seasoning. It features an irresistible taste profile with nutty sesame seeds and savory nori. This simple recipe uses just a few key ingredients and is perfect for adding flavor to quick dinners or healthy meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 tablespoons white sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon black sesame seeds
  • 4-5 sheets nori cut into thin strips or crumbled
  • 1 teaspoon flaky sea salt or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • optional ½ cup bonito flakes (katsuobushi), roughly chopped (skip for vegan)

Instructions

  1. Toast the white sesame seeds in a dry skillet over medium heat for about 2 minutes until fragrant and lightly golden. Add the black sesame seeds during the last 30 seconds to warm them up.
  2. With the heat off, transfer the toasted seeds to a bowl and add the bonito flakes if using. Toss them for about 30 seconds to dry them slightly.
  3. Use kitchen shears to cut the nori sheets into thin strips, then snip those into small pieces and add them directly to the bowl. Alternatively, crumble the nori by hand.
  4. In the bowl, add the salt and sugar, mixing everything together.
  5. Allow the mixture to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight jar for storage.

Notes

You can adjust the amount of salt and sugar based on your taste preferences.
For a vegan version, simply omit the bonito flakes.
